Unveiling the Beauty: Yogo & Montana Sapphires

Montana is known as the "Treasure State," and the truth of that lies beneath the surface where sapphires are found. The beloved Yogo & Montana Sapphires are mined from the heart of Montana and have long been some of my favorite gems to work with. Their color, history, and uniqueness never fail to inspire my designs. 

What are Montana Sapphires?

Montana Sapphires are loved and sought after for their wide range of naturally occurring shades-truly every color of the rainbow. From soft pinks to golden yellows, and everything in between, each stone has its own personality. Many used in jewelry are heat treated to enhance their color, though some are left natural.

Designer's Note: I found myself particularly drawn to Montana Sapphires when creating my Montana Sky Collection with their many earthy tones to perfectly capture the ever-changing beauty of the sky. 

What makes Yogo Sapphires special?

Yogo Sapphires are exclusively found in the Yogo Gulch in central Montana, making them extremely rare gems. They're known for their cornflower blue color-vivid & consistent. These sapphires are never heat treated (unlike most sapphires worldwide). Their natural color is so pure and prized, it doesn't need enhancement.

Designer's Note: Yogos hold a special place in my heart as I incorporate them into many of my personal and client custom designs.  

Yogo vs. Montana Sapphires: At a Glance

Yogo Sapphires:

• Exclusively cornflower blue, except the rare ~2% that are “plum” violet color. Also, rarely, Yogo sapphires can exhibit a color change phenomenon, shifting from cornflower blue to plum.
• Rare, collectible, untreated.
• Found only in Yogo Gulch.

Montana Sapphires

• Wide color range.
• More widely available than Yogos.
• Some require heat treatment.
